Kanchipuram - Tour of South India

The Tour of India is not complete without South India. The stone carvings, the Dravidian architecture is a part of South India tours and thus temples become a compulsory part of South India Tour. The heritage and rich culture of 3rd to 17th century is reflected in these primitive temples. Visitors keep changing but these temples still stand carrying the remembrances of several kings and dynasties high in the sky.

A tour to South India is incomplete without temples. There is one beautiful city called Kanchipuram which is included in Tamil Nadu Temple Tour, a minor category in South India Temple Tour. Kanchipuram or Kanchi is a city surrounded by temples, devotion and religious aura all around. Even an atheist would start believing in God taken in by positive religious energy emitted by everyone there. Known as Kachi or Kachiampathi in ancient times, it is located on Palar River.

This 'City of Thousand temples' is one of the seven sacred cities of India and it truly testifies to it name. It has got six hundred and fifty stone inscriptions and on hundred and fifty temples in and around the Kanchipuram city. There are some temples which are more famous than others and require a special attention.

Kailasanathar Temple is a perfect example of intricate architecture typical to South India. It is devoted to Lord Shiva and given a unique look by the Pallava king Rayasimha. It was built in part in seventh century AD but completed by Rayasimha's son in the later days. Till today, the originality of the temple has been preserved by the eighth century murals which exist even today.
